Google has expanded the capabilities of its Gemini AI assistant by enabling users to edit files generated by the model directly within the chat interface. Since April, Gemini has been able to create various file types, including Google Docs, Sheets, PDFs, and Markdown documents. Previously, any modifications required users to download or export the file before making changes. The new update resolves this workflow bottleneck by allowing immediate previewing and editing of documents, presentations, spreadsheets, code, and more inside the app.
When a generated file is opened, users can expand it to full-screen mode to type edits directly into the content. The interface also supports interactive features such as highlighting specific text to ask questions, requesting that Gemini refine the text or visuals, and posing follow-up queries related to the document. This integration aims to streamline the creative process by keeping the user within a single environment.
However, there are platform-specific limitations regarding these new features. While PDF preview and editing functionality is available on both web browsers and mobile devices, support for other formats—including Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files, and code—is currently restricted to the web version only. These enhancements are now live and accessible to all Gemini users in every language supported by the application.
