Google is experimenting with adding a status bar to Wear OS, bringing a system element commonly found on Android phones to smartwatches. A test version is included in the Wear OS 7.1 canary emulator, and the company is asking developers to try it and provide feedback.
The proposed bar would appear at the top of the screen and show the current time alongside the most important status indicator. When several indicators are available, only the one with the highest priority would be displayed. Possible indicators include microphone or location activity, connectivity and battery information.
Because screen space is limited on smartwatches, the bar would hide while users scroll through a list and return after two seconds without activity. Full-screen dialogs, such as warning pop-ups, would also conceal it. The interface would avoid displaying the time twice when the active screen already includes a clock.
Developers could also hide the status bar on specific app screens when they need additional space. Google says the feature could provide consistent clock typography, positioning and background treatment across the system and applications.
When used with Jetpack Compose for Wear OS 1.8, the status bar would coordinate automatically with scrolling and transitions. However, this remains an experiment: it is not available in the regular Wear OS 7.1 emulator and will not be included in the Wear OS 7.1 release for watches.
Google appears to be considering the status bar for Wear OS 8, although its future may depend on developer feedback. Developers can review the changes to AppScaffold and ScreenScaffold through Google’s documentation.
