The RE300 uses Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and operates on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, with advertised combined speeds of up to 1,200 Mbps. TP-Link lists up to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and up to 867 Mbps on 5 GHz.
To set it up, users plug the extender into an outlet between the router and the area with poor coverage, then connect it to the router using WPS or the smartphone app. A front-facing LED indicates whether the extender is receiving a sufficient signal or is positioned too far from the router.
The RE300 also supports TP-Link OneMesh, which can create a mesh network with the same network name and password when used with compatible TP-Link equipment. However, it has no Ethernet port, so wired connections to devices such as a television or console are not an option.
