Meta will end operating system updates for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro after March 2027, with OS v213 marking the final update for both headsets. The company will continue providing security updates through the end of 2027, according to a Meta developers blog post.
The end of OS support will not remove cross-play multiplayer or block Quest 2 and Quest Pro users from games that support their devices. Those games can continue to work provided they do not depend on OS features introduced after March 2027. Developers must give players six months’ notice if they plan to end support for a game.
The Quest 2 launched six years ago and has sold around 20 million units, making it the best-selling VR headset of all time, according to the source. The Quest Pro, released in October 2022 and built on the same chipset, will receive two fewer years of security updates than the Quest 2. Game support may become harder to find after January 2028.
Meta’s newer headsets are the Quest 3 and Quest 3S, released in 2023 and 2024. The company is also expected to introduce Meta VR Glasses early next year. The Quest 2’s aging mobile chip is a factor in Meta’s decision to stop developing new features for the older hardware.
