Microsoft says it has improved the experience of using Windows PCs with 8GB of RAM. In lab testing, the company found the systems were 20% more responsive overall and 40% faster at multitasking.
The changes include keeping up to 2GB of additional active data in memory to reduce the need to reload it. Microsoft also reports that common tasks—such as opening the Start menu, launching Snipping Tool and using File Explorer—are 20% faster. Edge opens links from Start 33% faster, while Microsoft Teams has added an “Efficiency Mode.”
Microsoft says its Microsoft 365 apps now use up to 360MB less memory, and Widgets load on demand, saving around 200MB. The company is also continuing work on memory compression and collaborating with third-party developers to improve memory usage.
