ChatGPT’s search volume is roughly one-fifth of Google Search’s, according to Adam Fry, OpenAI’s consumer product lead. Fry shared the estimate at an OpenAI press event, describing ChatGPT’s volume as “roughly one-fifth (20%)” of Google’s query total.
The comparison comes with important uncertainties: OpenAI did not reveal the source of Google’s search-volume figures, and its own definition counts a query when a prompt leads ChatGPT to search the web. Fry described this as asking a question and then searching the web.
If the figures are comparable, ChatGPT would represent a substantial challenger to Google Search. OpenAI has expanded its AI-powered search offering over the past two years, while Google has also been increasing its use of AI in Search. Google has acknowledged that this approach brings “lower monetization.”
Fry also said that users value ChatGPT’s personalization and understanding. On advertising, he said most people do not seem to mind ads in ChatGPT and suggested the company could show them more often.
