Many people assume that paying for a faster Internet plan will automatically improve their online experience. However, the speed provided by an operator is not always the speed that devices actually receive, particularly when connecting over WiFi. Before changing plans, it is advisable to test the connection, preferably with an Ethernet cable, and check a few common causes of poor performance.
Changing the DNS servers can reduce the time a browser takes to locate some websites. DNS translates a website’s name into its corresponding IP address, allowing users to access pages without entering numerical addresses manually. The default servers usually belong to the Internet provider and are a valid option, although they are not necessarily the fastest.
Alternative DNS services, including free options from Cloudflare and Google, can be configured on a router or mobile device. This change may improve the initial loading of some websites, but it will not increase the download speed included in the contracted plan.
The router’s location also has a significant effect on WiFi performance. Placing it inside a cabinet, behind furniture or in another obstructed area can weaken the wireless signal. A better position is elevated, unobstructed and as central as possible, while also considering where the most frequently used devices are located.
Walls, furniture and long distances can make coverage particularly difficult in large homes, properties with several floors or houses with long corridors. In those situations, a wired connection may provide better results where it is practical.
If the connection only performs poorly in rooms far from the router, a WiFi repeater can extend the network’s reach. It should be installed where it still receives a strong signal from the router; placing it in an area with almost no coverage will not solve the problem.
Repeaters can reduce the speed available over the extended connection. For larger homes or properties with multiple floors, a WiFi Mesh system or a second access point connected by cable may offer better results.
