WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that suggests a user’s most recently added photo or video when they open a chat. The feature is available to some users on Android and iOS with the latest versions of the app.

The suggestion can appear in one of two ways: as a notification above the chat bar showing a thumbnail and asking whether the user wants to send it, or as a temporary replacement for the camera icon in the chat bar. Users can dismiss the prompt or ignore it and continue chatting.

Selecting the suggestion opens WhatsApp’s drawing editor rather than sending the media immediately. Users can review the item, add a caption or sticker, send it, or exit without sharing it.

WhatsApp selects the latest item in the gallery regardless of its type or source. It could be a photo, screenshot, image downloaded from the web, or video saved from another app.

The feature activates automatically when it reaches an account. To turn it off, users can go to Settings > Chats and disable “Recent media suggestions.” The rollout is gradual, with wider availability expected over the coming weeks; WhatsApp has not said when it will reach everyone.
