Google plans to let developers integrate Quick Share into their apps, making it possible to send files to nearby devices without leaving the app. The company announced Quick Share SDKs for Android and iOS at its Android Dev Summit, with release planned for the first half of 2027.
Apps using the SDK will show a bottom sheet with previews of the files being sent, rather than opening the system share sheet or the full-screen Quick Share interface. Google says transfers will use local networks and be end-to-end encrypted between devices. The SDK can create a hotspot when needed and use Wi-Fi Direct on supported devices.
Photos and videos will retain their full resolution, and transfers will work offline because files are not sent through the cloud. Developers can also mark content as sensitive so it is masked in previews. Google says adding the feature takes about 20 lines of code and does not require developers to maintain server infrastructure.
With Tap to Share, the receiving app can launch automatically when a transfer finishes, even if it was not already open. Google says Quick Share is available on more than 3 billion devices across Android, ChromeOS and Windows. The new in-app sharing option will depend on developers choosing to adopt the SDK.
