Movistar’s ‘Spam Calls’ feature has become the fastest-adopted service ever recorded by Telefónica’s commercial brand, according to the company. Launched in March, the tool has already been activated on 1.2 million lines in seven months.
The feature identifies unwanted calls and alerts customers before they decide whether to answer. Users can also request a complete block, preventing those calls from making the phone ring. Since its launch, Movistar says it has detected 166 million spam calls and blocked more than 15 million at the request of customers who enabled the full-blocking option.
Telefónica has linked these measures to Spain’s Order TDF/149/2025 against telephone fraud. The company says it was the first operator to implement measures against identity impersonation ahead of the regulatory deadlines. Since the order came into force, the total number of blocked voice calls has reached 241 million, according to Telefónica.
Other operators offer comparable tools, including Orange’s ‘Visible Call’ and Digi’s ‘Possible spam’ label.
Telefónica is also working on protection against fraudulent text messages. The company says it has already blocked more than 28 million scam SMS messages and is developing a feature to detect suspicious content.
The SMS detection system is currently in a training phase, using the content of messages from users who have given their consent. Customers can participate through their online account or the Mi Movistar app by selecting ‘Manage Your Protection’, then ‘SMS’ and ‘Advanced detection of fraudulent SMS’.
